Broadway Heritage plc, developers of The Elms, Houghton, Cambridgeshire, is sponsoring a summer ‘Charity Art Competition’ for the members of the St Ives Art Group and the Huntingdon Art Group and members of the public interested in architectural subjects.
Broadway is committed to the patronage of emerging and local artists in the communities where their developments are located and Houghton is no exception. The winner of ‘The Elms Houghton Charity Art Competition’ will receive a cash prize of £200, and an additional £250 to donate to a charity of their choice. Two Highly Commended entrants will each receive a cheque for £100.
Entrants are being invited to focus their talent on depicting the handsome façade of the Mansion House at The Elms. This impressive Victorian mansion was built by local mill owner and philanthropist Potto Brown for his son in 1868. It contains 7 two- and three-bedroom apartments and is complemented by 4 new-build gracious apartment buildings – and a 2-apartment Coach House bringing the total to 23 homes, all set within 6 acres of landscaped private gardens - an attractive subject for artists with an architectural eye.
Michael Hodges, Broadway's Managing Director said: "The Elms is a gracious addition to the village community. It has been satisfying to see the Mansion House regain its former glory and a joy to restore the original plan for the garden. The mature trees are particularly attractive, especially the fine specimens of Sequoiadendron giganteum (Giant Sequoia, Sierra Redwood, or Wellingtonia) the world’s largest and oldest trees.
“At The Elms we’ve combined the best of 21st-century low carbon footprint building technology with traditional-styling – offering high ceilings, generous room sizes and first-class kitchens and bathrooms. We think it’s the best of both worlds. Having an artistic rendition of the development will be a fitting tribute to the work of all those involved in bringing it to reality."
The winning entry to the Charity Art Competition will be put on permanent display in the entrance hallway of the Mansion House.
Each entrant is able to submit one entry in the medium of their choice - oils, acrylics, watercolour, mixed media, pastels, charcoal, pen and ink, embroidery or collage.
Closing date for entries is 4 pm on Friday 5th September.
Further details are available on the website. Those wishing to enter the competition should email/telephone Sally Davis to register their interest on sd@broadwayplc Tel 023 9266 1700.
